President Trump's Executive Order on immigration and the ensuing public reaction seems to have had a substantive impact on the highly competitive rideshare market. Data from our proprietary panel reveal a swift drop in Uber receipt volume and an uptick in Lyft receipt volume in the days after news of the Executive Order. Uber volume has ticked back up over the last week but it is not yet clear whether the balance will return to pre taxi strike levels.
Protesters cited Uber's perceived lack of support for the New York Taxi Worker's temporary strike on JFK airport trips and Travis Kalanick's, Uber's chief executive, membership on the President's business advisory council to popularize the hashtag #deleteuber, which was peaking in the hours following the Jan 29th taxi strike. Kalanick responded by offering support to drivers and then eventually leaving the business advisory council.
