The on-demand food platform competitive landscape remains fierce. Earlier this year, Amazon announced the end of their own delivery service, instead focusing on international investments in Deliveroo; DoorDash announced its upcoming acquisition of Caviar; and recently, several food on-demand platforms shared plans for expansion into the grocery delivery space. With change remaining one of the few constants in this space, Edison Trends analyzed 1.4 million transactions from the top on-demand food platforms across the USA to report to provide some insights into this booming industry.

Which on-demand food platform has the highest market share of transactions across the USA?

Looking at market share purely in terms of number of transactions, in May DoorDash surpassed the previous leader Uber Eats. DoorDash currently leads by a small margin, with UberEats close behind, followed by Grubhub, Postmates and Caviar.

Which on-demand food platform has the most market share of total consumer spend across the USA?

Comparing September 2019 data to September 2018, DoorDash has increased its market share lead in customer spending from 27% to 35%, while UberEats has moved from 29% to 25%. Grubhub has also fallen, from 30% to 23%, while Postmates has fallen from 9% to 6%. Caviar has remained the same at 2%, while other delivery services have gone from 9% of the market to 10%.

At the beginning of the year, Grubhub, UberEats, and DoorDash all had approximately the same market share of consumer spend. Since then, DoorDash saw a lot of growth and recently showed signs that their share of spend may be leveling off. Uber Eats and Grubhub market shares both gradually dipped and then saw slight gains. Postmates has seen a slight decline in their market share since late 2018, while Caviar has remained within a tight range for the majority of the past two years.

UberEats saw the lowest cost per order in the first half of September, at $27. Postmates, Grubhub, and DoorDash cost per order ranges similarly at $31-$32. Caviar customers spent the most, with an average order price of $42.
